Abido Anise Seeds are whole aniseed (Pimpinella anisum) - small ridged seeds with a sweet liquorice aroma, used across the Levant for yansoon tea, ka'ak breads, pickles and the spiced chickpeas (balila) sold on Beirut streets. Abido is a Lebanese brand of herbs, spices and spice blends.
Keep them whole for infusions and breads, or toast and crush for biscuits. Whole seeds hold their oils far longer than ground, so the flavour stays fresh to the last spoon.
How to use it
- Anise tea (yansoon) – Simmer 1 tsp seeds in a cup of water for 5 minutes, strain and sweeten with honey.
- Breads & ka'ak – Knead 1 tbsp into 1kg dough, or sprinkle over the crust with sesame.
- Pickles & brines – Add a teaspoon to the jar for turnip or cucumber pickles.
- Spiced chickpeas – Boil chickpeas with cumin and aniseed for balila, finish with lemon and garlic.

Is this star anise?
No - these are true aniseed seeds (Pimpinella anisum), sweeter and milder than star anise.
How do I make the tea?
Simmer a teaspoon of seeds for 5 minutes, strain and add honey - a Lebanese after-dinner classic.
