Abido Anise Powder is finely ground aniseed (Pimpinella anisum) - sweet, liquorice-scented and the flavour behind Lebanese ka'ak, ma'amoul, sfouf and meghli (the celebration rice pudding). This is true aniseed, not star anise. Abido Spices has been Lebanon's best-known spice house since 1950 - still family-run, grinding and blending at its own ISO 22000-certified factory in Naameh, just south of Beirut.
Ground ready to use: stir into biscuit and bread dough, whisk into milk puddings, or brew a soothing yansoon tea. One 50g sachet seasons many batches of baking.
How to use it
- Ka'ak & breads – Add 1-2 tsp per 500g flour to ka'ak rings, Easter breads and sweet rolls.
- Meghli & puddings – Whisk 1 tsp with caraway and cinnamon into rice-flour pudding for meghli.
- Biscuits & cakes – Flavour ma'amoul, sfouf and shortbread - pairs with sesame and mahlab.
- Anise tea – Stir 1/2 tsp into a cup of hot water with honey for a traditional after-dinner yansoon.

Is this star anise?
No - this is ground aniseed (Pimpinella anisum), the sweeter, softer spice used in Lebanese baking. Star anise is a different spice.
Can I make tea with it?
Yes - 1/2 teaspoon in hot water, sweetened with honey, is the classic yansoon drink.
How much for baking?
1-2 teaspoons per 500g flour is typical for ka'ak and biscuits.
