Greenfields Chinese 5 Spice 75g

Greenfields Chinese 5 Spice is the classic Chinese five spice powder – fennel, cinnamon, star anise, black pepper and cloves – blended to balance sweet, sour and bitter notes, as in traditional Chinese cooking. Greenfields is a London-based herbs and spices brand that has supplied quality ingredients since 1982.

Rub it into pork belly, duck or chicken before roasting, add a pinch to stir-fries, marinades and noodle dishes, or use it to season roasted vegetables and nuts.

How to use it

• Crispy pork belly or duck – Rub 1–2 teaspoons into the meat with salt, a little sugar and soy sauce before roasting.
• Stir-fries – Add a pinch with the garlic and ginger at the start of cooking.
• Sticky ribs – Mix with honey, soy sauce and garlic for a glaze.

Does it contain salt?

No – the ingredients are fennel, cinnamon, star aniseed, black pepper and cloves only.

How much should I use?

It is strongly aromatic – start with ½–1 teaspoon per 500g of meat or vegetables.

What allergens does it contain?

None of the 14 major allergens are listed in the ingredients. Greenfields states that some of its blends are made in a facility that also handles sesame, mustard and celery. If you have a severe allergy, please check the pack label before use.

How should I store it?

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Reseal the pack (or decant into an airtight jar) after opening.
