How to cook
- Rinse – Rinse the rice 2–3 times in cold water until the water runs almost clear.
- Soak (optional) – Soak for 20–30 minutes for longer, more separate grains, then drain.
- Water – As a guide, about 1 cup of rice to 2–2½ cups of water, with a pinch of salt.
- Cook – Bring to the boil, then cover and simmer on a low heat for about 15–20 minutes until the water is absorbed. Sella (parboiled) rice usually needs a little more water and time than white basmati.
- Rest – Turn off the heat, keep covered for 5 minutes, then fluff gently with a fork.
- Pack instructions – Cooking times vary between crops – always follow the instructions printed on the bag.
Good to know
What is sella rice?
Sella (also called parboiled) basmati is steamed while still in its husk, then dried and milled. The grains come out firmer and more separate, hold their shape well in biryani, kabsa and pilau, and are less likely to break or turn sticky.
What is 1121 basmati?
Pusa Basmati 1121 is a basmati variety famous for its extra long grains: cooked grains are typically about twice their uncooked length and stay non-sticky.
Is Alwazah the same as Swan rice?
Yes – the bag carries both names: Alwazah Rice (أرز الوزة) and Swan.
Where is it from?
Pakistan.
How much water do I need?
