About this product
Sara Medium Bulgur Wheat (bulgouri, pourgouri, bulgar) is wheat that has been partly cooked, dried and cracked into medium-sized grains. It has a mild, nutty flavour and cooks in about 15 minutes, keeping a pleasant bite that is ideal for pilafs and grain salads.
Make a classic bulgur pilaf with onion, tomato or vermicelli, grain salads such as tabbouleh and kısır, stuffings for peppers, tomatoes and vine leaves, or add it to soups, stews and veggie burgers. Use it in place of rice or couscous. The 5kg and 25kg packs suit restaurants, takeaways, caterers and shops.

How to cook
- Rinse – Rinse the bulgur in cold water and drain
- Quantity – 1 cup bulgur : 1½ cups water or stock, plus a pinch of salt
- Cook – Bring to the boil, cover and simmer gently for about 15 minutes until the liquid is absorbed
- Rest – Take off the heat, keep covered for 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork
- Tip – For pilaf, fry a chopped onion (and a handful of vermicelli) in butter or oil first, then add the bulgur and stock. For salads, cook as above and let it cool before dressing.
Good to know
Fine, medium or coarse bulgur?
Fine bulgur gives a delicate texture, coarse a chewy, robust one. Medium sits in between – a firmer, heartier grain that is the usual choice for pilafs and grain salads.
Do I need to soak it?
No – rinse it, then simmer in 1½ times its volume of water or stock for about 15 minutes and rest for 5 minutes.
Is it gluten free?
No – bulgur is made from wheat, so it contains gluten.
Which size should I choose?
500g and 1kg for home use, 2kg (two 1kg packs) for larger families, 5kg for batch cooking and 25kg for restaurants, caterers and bulk buyers – the bigger the pack, the lower the price per kilo.
What allergens does it contain?
Contains wheat (a cereal containing gluten). May contain traces of other cereals and pulses – please check the pack label.
How should I store it?
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Reseal the pack or transfer to an airtight container after opening.
How is it delivered?
