About this product

Madina Medjool Date Paste is a thick, smooth paste made from Medjool dates – the large, soft, caramel-flavoured variety often called the king of dates. Stoned and worked into a dense, spoonable paste, it brings the deep toffee-like sweetness of Medjool to your baking, breakfast and snacks with none of the stoning and blending. Choose Plain, or Sesame – the same Medjool paste studded with whole sesame seeds for a nutty crunch – from the options above. Each is a generous 700g tub.

Use it as a natural sweetener in cakes, flapjacks, brownies and cookies, fill maamoul and ka’ak, roll it into energy balls, blend it into smoothies and date shakes, swirl it through porridge and yoghurt, or simply spread it on toast or flatbread. The sesame version is lovely sliced and served with coffee or tea.

Ways to use Medjool date paste

  • Natural sweetener – Swap it for sugar in cakes, muffins, flapjacks, brownies and cookies – roughly like for like, reducing the other liquid a little, as the paste is moist.
  • Maamoul & ka’ak – Roll the paste into small balls or logs and wrap them in maamoul or ka’ak dough for Ramadan and Eid baking.
  • Energy balls & bars – Mix with oats, ground nuts, seeds and cocoa and roll into balls or press into bars – the paste binds the mix.
  • Smoothies & shakes – Blend a spoonful with milk, banana and oats for a date shake, or add it to any smoothie as the sweetener.
  • Breakfast & toast – Swirl it through porridge, overnight oats or yoghurt, or spread it on toast, flatbread or rice cakes with butter, tahini or nut butter.
  • The sesame tub – Slice it into fingers and serve with coffee or tea, crumble it over granola, or spread it on warm bread.
  • To loosen – Date paste is thick. Knead it with a little soft butter or oil for fillings, or stir in a little warm water or milk for a spreadable consistency.

Good to know

What is Medjool date paste?

Medjool dates with the stones removed and the flesh worked into a thick, smooth paste. Medjool is the large, soft, caramel-flavoured variety, so the paste is richer and more toffee-like than standard date paste.

Plain or Sesame?

Plain is pure Medjool paste – the all-rounder for baking, fillings and spreading. Sesame is the same paste studded with whole sesame seeds for a nutty crunch – lovely sliced with coffee or spread on warm bread. The Sesame tub contains sesame.

Does it contain added sugar?

The brand lists only dates – plus sesame seeds in the sesame version – so the sweetness comes from the fruit itself. Dates naturally contain sugars. Please check the pack label for the definitive ingredients list.

Can I bake with it instead of sugar?

Yes – swap it for sugar roughly like for like and reduce the other liquid in the recipe a little, as the paste is moist. It also works as a maamoul and date-cookie filling.

How should I store it after opening?

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, keep the lid on and use within a few weeks; keeping it in the fridge keeps it fresher for longer, and it can also be frozen in portions.

Is it the same as your Madina Date Paste 1kg?

No – this is made with Medjool dates and comes in 700g tubs, plain or with sesame. The 1kg/5kg Madina Date Paste is the standard date paste for bulk baking.

What is the best before date?

It is printed on the pack. If you need a particular date, please contact us before you order.

Ingredients & allergens
Ingredients
Plain: Medjool dates. Sesame: Medjool dates, sesame seeds (Sesamum indicum) – as listed by the brand. The full ingredients list and allergy information are printed on the pack. The Sesame option contains sesame seeds, one of the 14 major food allergens. Dates themselves are not a major allergen, but the brand’s date pastes carry a “may contain peanuts, other nuts and sesame” warning, so neither tub is suitable for anyone with a peanut, nut or sesame allergy. Always read the pack label before use.
